With a background in freelance journalism and English teaching, Jacob P. Avila decided to commit himself to writing fiction three years ago. "I've always liked telling stories. Narrative opens us. It lets us experience characters and emotions and make sense of ideas and beliefs we might otherwise reject out of hand. Writing lets us escape who we are."
Also writing as Simon Vespasian, Jacob P. Avila continues to experiment with genre. "I grew up reading everything and everyone, from Günter Grass to Alistair Maclean and my work reflects this. 'Dirty Blonde' is hard-boiled horror tapping a comedic Australian zeitgeist, whereas 'Cave Diver' is action-adventure infused with deeper themes which question what makes us tick."
Currently Jacob P Avila is working on a speculative fiction trilogy charting the fall of civilisation. Set primarily in the USA, the saga utilises multi point of view to explore the fate of humankind. "This project is really close to my heart. Most climate change fiction is metaphor; zombies and post apocalyptic, but I wanted to start with a realistic vision of the near future and take my characters forward into the abyss. Our near proximity to that fate makes it hard to write about but it's something I feel compelled to do."
Jacob P. Avila lives in northern NSW, Australia, with his wife, Cathy.
